AbrahamLincoln, thesixteenth presidentof theUS,wasone of theoutspokenleadersthat opposedslaveryat a periodwhenslaverywasan acceptednormin theUS (Foner,2010). After his election,PresidentLincoln oftenexpressedhis moraloppositionto slaveryowingto theincreasedillspropagatedby thevice.During theAmerican civilwarperiod,Lincoln usedhis presidentialpowersandissuedtheEmancipation Proclamation that forcedallslaveownerswithin theUS ordesignatedpartof thestateto freetheir slaves.In thedecree,Lincoln statedthatslaveownerswhodidnot freetheir slaveswererebellingagainst theUS. Theorderledto emancipationof millions of slaves,stoppingfurtherexpansionof slaveryin the US.Lincoln implementedtheproclamationdespite theincreasedoppositionfrom Democrats andslaveowners,riskinghis politicalcareer(Foner,2010). Thispaperexemplifiesthewisdomdisplayedby Lincoln by illegalizing slavery.

Asa youngman,Lincoln hadwitnessedtheevilsof slaveryon a firsthandin his travelsin Kentucky andNew Orleans. Healsounderstoodtheimpactof racismon people’slivesandpolitics,hencewasdeterminedto endthevice(Foner,2010). Forone, slaverywasthedeepestformof naturalinjusticeandpromotingthecollapseof slaveryin America wasessentialin makingtheUS thelandof freemen,as envisioned by theconstitution(Foner,2010). IfLincoln didnot actagainst slavery,thevicewould havecontinued,encouragingparamilitary activitiesto capturepotentialslave-holding areassuchas Cuba. After hispublic declaration about his detestforslavery,anycompromisewould stainhis prestigeandmakehim an ineffectualpresident(Foner,2010). Since hewaselectedon theplatformof endingslavery,anycompromisewould haveunderminedtheprinciplemajorityruleandweakentheRepublic party.Despite thethought,thathis standwould worsen thecivilwarwaserroneous,in fact,thestandmadethesouthernunionist remainloyalandrebelsecession(Foner,2010).

Assuch,Lincoln decisionwasa wiseawisemove,thatstrengthenedtheRepublican Partyas wellas his presidency.Thedecisionalsoincreasedroyaltyfrom Southern Unionists, whohelpedwinthecaseagainst secession.Assuch,individualsshould analyzetheimportanceof their decisionsandimplementthem, especiallyifthedecisionwill be of benefitto thehumanrace.
