Thedevelopmentof theoverheadprojector increasedthepopularityof classroom training,butmoderntechnological advancesare replacingthistypeof training.Moderntechnology allowstrainersandorganizationsto blendweb-based traininginto their stand-up sessions,which is accomplishedby makingthetrainingpackagesavailablein tablets,desktops, andothermobiledevices(Gilbert, 2014). Theavailability of thetechnological devicesandthebenefitsassociatedwith e-learning comparedto classroom sessionshas contributedtowards therapidconversion.Thisimpliesthate-learning is moreconvenient,budget-friendly, andmoreeffectiveto both thetrainerandtheworkforce that is beingtrained.

Keyelementsof e-learning that has influencedtraininganddevelopment

E-learningsavesontimeandmoneyforboth thetrainerandtrainees. Accordingto Gilbert(2014)advancesthat havebeenmadesoftware developedhaveallowedtrainersto savetimeandachievesuperiorresultson allprojects.Thesoftware facilitateseffectiveinteractionsbetween thelearnersandtrainingprogramsthrough theprocesscycle,pyramid,andglossary.Theseelementsof interactionare accessedby a singleclick,thusallowingthelearnerto accessthelearningsessioneasily.Thesoftware alsoprovidesan easy,cheap,andfasterwayof assessingtheeffectiveness of thetrainingprogram.Thisis becausethesoftware has a quiztoolthat providesquestionsandscoresinterpretative capabilities(Gilbert, 2014). Thismeansthatlearnersare requiredto undertakean automatedtestafter everytrainingsession,which convenientto trainersandlearners.

E-learning,unlike theclassroom sessions,providesa moreflexiblelearningas wellas trainingexperience.Forexample,a trainingprogramthat isdevelopedon Adobe Captivate allowslearnersto pausethecurrentsessionandcontinuelearninglaterat their convenienttimeandlocationusingmobiledevicesorcomputers.However,trendsshowthatlearnersprefertrainingprogramsthat arespecificallytailoredformobiledevices,which suggeststhattherateat which mobiledevicesare beingusedto conducttrainingwill continueincreasing(Gilbert, 2014).In addition,thefactthata learnercan pausea trainingsessionin one deviceandresumeitin anotherdevicein a differentlocationincreasestheconvenienceandflexibilityof e-learning.

E-learningprogramsthat arepreparedon thedigital platformprovidetrainerswith an opportunityto exploittheavailablealternativesto enhancethelearners’experience.Forexample,an e-learning programallowsthetrainerto editcharacters,simulations, andelementsin orderto ensurethattheprogramaddressspecificneedsof eachgroupof learners(Gilbert, 2014).

Theterm‘social’has gainedsignificancein organizationsoperatingin thecontemporarybusinessenvironment.Consequently, trainerspreferusingtrainingprogramsthat facilitatesocialization andinteractionduring andafter thetrainingsessions.E-learning providesthesecapabilitiesbecauseitprovidesopportunitiesforcollaboration andcommunicationamong learnersandbetween learnersandthetrainer(Athey, 2012). However,socializationonlybe achievediftrainingcoursesincorporatesocialelements,suchas groupcollaboration andsociallearning.Therefore,e-learning is aneffectivetoolthat allowsparticipantsto exchangeandshareresourcesandspecializedknowledge.

Futuretrendsof e-learning

Thereare four futuretrendsof e-learning that will influencetraininganddevelopmentin thefuture.First,organizationswill continuefocusingon adaptive learningthat breaksconventionalmethodsin orderto helptrainees learnat their pace(Wentworth, 2014). Adaptive teachingwill allowtrainersto collectinformationabout individualemployeesandmonitortheir progressin real-time in orderto determinestrategiesthat bestsuitstheir respectiveneeds.

Secondly,thetypeof technology beingusedto delivere-learning trainingcourseswill alsochangewith time.Currently, mostof thecoursesare offeredthrough teleconferencing andvideotapes,buttechnology will shiftto theuseof computer-based training,experiential, andmultimedia training(Training andDevelopment, 1996). Multimedia trainingwill enhancethesocialaspectof trainingfoster thecultureof learningin modernorganizations.Thiswill increaseconvenienceandflexibilityof employeetraining.

Third,organizationsare likelyto gomobilein thefutureby increasetheuseof mobiledevicesin thedeliveryof trainingcourses.Currently,only10 % of firms usemobilelearningsolutions,where8 % of them usemobileapps that facilitatelearning,5 % useweb-based sites,and4 % usemobileapps to evaluateperformance(Wentworth, 2014).Extensiveuseof mobiletrainingwill be enhancedby theincreasein thepopularityof perceptionsthatmobilelearningenhancesadoption,engageusers, andincreasesglobal reachcomparedto classroom sessionsthat targets a limitednumberof employeesa givenworkplace setting.

Conclusion

Althoughclassroom sessionshavebeenusedin trainingemployeesforlong,technological advanceswill facilitatea transitionfrom conventionaltrainingto e-learning. E-learning has a largenumberof benefitsto trainees andthetrainer.E-learning allowslearnersto accessthetrainingcoursesfrom anylocationandusingdifferentdevices.Trainers,on theotherhand,can designcoursesanddeliverthem to thetargetworkforce within a shortperiodandin a waythat thecoursesaddressspecificneedsof eachworkforce. Thisimpliesthate-learning is flexibleandconvenienton thepartof thetrainerandtheworkforce that is beingtrained.Futuretrendswill influencetheapproachesusedto delivere-learning. Forexample,organizationswill makethebestuseof mobileapplicationsanddevicesto reachandengagemoreemployeesin their trainingprograms.
