ApplePrivacy Issue

In2011 Apple iOS locationdata storagehadprivacyweaknessthat logged timestamp, latitudeandlongitudeof celltowersandWiFi hotspots on consolidated filewhetherthelocationbased serviceshadbeenenabledornot (Sawayda, 2011).Theconsolidated filewasstoredin an unencrypted formon an iOS4 devicesystemfrom theinstantthemanufacturersinstalledtheoperatingsystem.Thisdatawaseffectivelycopiedto all thecomputersthat weresynced with thedevice, leavingcrucialinformationon wheretheuser hadbeenwith their iPad. Thisprivacyissueraiseswidespreadhavocamong consumerswhowereaffectedandthe governmentwhoviewedthisas an infringementof user privacy(Sawayda, 2011). To redressthisprivacybreach,Apple Inc announcedthattheusers hadan optionto disableall thefeatureson their phonesthat alloweddata transfer.ButitsoonemergedthatApple wasgivingmisleading informationas becausesomeof theIphones andIpads continuedto collecttimestamp andlocationinformation, evenin theeventwhenthefeaturesmentionedabove weredisabled. To protecttheir prideandCompany’s image,Apple accreditedthisto a software malfunctionthatitlatercorrectedwith newsoftware (Sawayda, 2011).

Therealizationthatthecellphonessoldto users in 2011 could collectdata on thelocationof theiPhone andiPad madeconsumersfeelas ifthecompanywasslackin protectinguser information.Appledealtwith theproblemby introducinga newsoftware, butsomeusers havereportedsimilarprivacybreachesevenwith thenewsoftware. Applehas appearedunableto dealfullywith issuesrelatingto privacyareas(Sawayda, 2011). Nonetheless,It is importantto statethatApple has managedto stayall theseyearwith limitedprivacyviolationsandbreachesthat touchon ethicalstandards.Thisis dueto thefactthatApple has instilleduponits workforceto conductthemselves appropriatelyirrespective of thecircumstance.

Suggestion

Appleshould havehandledtheprivacyissuedifferently.Insteadof tryingto defendtheimageof thecompanyby askingusers to disablesomefeatures, thecompanywould haveacceptedtherehadbeena problemwith thesoftware, andcallallaffecteddevicesandcorrectthemistake.Productswith privacybreachescan inflicta prominentimpacton thewayconsumersviewtheproductandthecompany’sbrand.Appleprivacyflawshavereducedthetrustof thecustomers, andthecompanywill needto designbetterprivacyenhancingtechnologies to protectthefirms’ brand.
