Developingpersonal skills have been considered one of the health promotionaction areas by the Ottawa Charter (WorldHealth Organisation).In health promotion, older adults can be equipped with skills thatcan help them in illness and disease management. It is possible toteach these older adults because they are not too old to startexercising, change their diets, or even quit smoking, when it comesto health matters. Since chronic illnesses are more prevalent amongthe older people, developing the skills of the older people can be acritical aspect because they can use the skills to empower themselvesand manage the chronic illnesses. The aim of this assignment is toillustrate empowerment in social care practice through developingpersonal skills among the older people.

Chronicillnesses are common amid the older people. In developing theirpersonal skills concerning the diseases, it is critical first of allto identify the most common chronic diseases. It is with thisinformation that the older people will be provided with theinformation concerning the diseases. When teaching the older people,emphasis should be taken in teaching the elderly on how to recognizethe onset of different chronic illnesses, treatment information, andhow the illnesses can be prevented. When teaching the older people,it is also important to recommend issues that may help in promotingquality of life.

Throughproviding different information on chronic diseases to the olderpeople, there will be empowerment in the social care practice(Mcqueen &amp Salazar, 2011). This is because the older people willbe in a position to take care of themselves in managing chronicdiseases. By using the skills that they will have gained from theteachings that they receive, it would be possible to identify riskfactors that can make them acquire the chronic illnesses and themanagement options available to them. Equipped with this knowledge,it is possible for the older people to take care of themselves.Besides, with this knowledge, there would be empowerment in thesocial care practice since a big section of the older people would beequipped with the knowledge concerning how to prevent and managechronic illnesses.

Healthpromotion through teaching the older people on chronic diseases is acritical and relevant action in ensuring that the older peopledevelop personal skills that they can use in helping themselves andthe people around their community (Adams,2007).This would promote health in the social care and give practitionersan easy time dealing with them.

Inorder to ensure that the older people develop personal skills indealing with chronic diseases, mediation is required among thedifferent stakeholders such as the government, local authorities,voluntary organizations, health and social sectors, and economicsector amid others (Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion). Enablingstrategies would include providing information to the older people ina language that they can comprehend, the willingness of the olderpeople to change their lifestyles that is, should be free frombarriers, and availability of resources. On the other hand, theadvocacy strategy would be how to attain quality life through themanagement of chronic diseases among the older people.

Conclusion

Inorder to empower the older people, it is critical to promote theirhealth welfare. Since chronic illnesses emerge as being the mostcommon health challenges among the older people, it is critical toequip them with information that they can use preventing and managingthe chronic illness. They can gain these skills through teachingthem. It is important for all the concerned parties to get involvedin order to make development of the skills feasible.
