IntegrativeCouplesTherapyandExperiential Therapies

Integrativecoupletherapyis a relativelynewmodelof therapythat combinesapproachesfrom behavioral coupletherapyandnewapproachesthat seekto cultivateacceptance.Experiential therapy,on theotherhand, refersto an empirically supportedandemotion-focused therapythat systematicallyhelpsclientsbecomeawareof their emotions(Nichols, 2013). IBCT wasspecificallydesignedforcoupleswith relationshipchallenges.Experiential therapy,on theotherhand, can be usedto addressa widerangeof healthchallenges, includingalcoholaddictionandeatingdisordersamong others (Psychological Treatment, 2014). Thisimpliesthatexperiential therapyis effectivetoa widerangeof populationsandillnesses. Moreover, experiential therapyfunctionsby helpingpatientsidentifyanddealwith theunconsciousorhiddenissue, which isaccomplishedthrough differentexperiences, suchas theuseof props(Psychological Treatment, 2014). IBCT, on theotherhand, focuseson emotionalissuesthat affectrelationshipsbetween partners.

Thetwo approachesare similarin three majorways.First, thetwo approachesemphasizeon theroleof individualswith psychologicalproblemsplayinga rolein thetherapyprocess.Forexample, therealizationof unconsciousemotionsin experiential therapyis achievedthrough rolerole-playing whileIBCT therapists requireclientsto makepurposefulchangesin their targetproblems(Tartakovsky, 2014). Second, althoughIBCT focuseson couples,bothapproachesaddressself-discovery andpersonalrelationshipswith theobjectiveof helpingpeoplerealizetheunderlying psychologicalchallengescausingproblemsin their relationship.Third, thetwo approachesseekto enhancethecapacityof patientsto becomemoresensitiveto their feelingsandneedsin orderto helpthem establishhealthyrelationshipswith otherpeople.Thisimpliesthatemotionalhealing startswith individualpatientsrealizingtheir respectivefeelingsandneeds. In conclusionIBCT andexperiential therapydifferin severalways, buttheyhaveseveralpointsof convergence.
