Leadersshould be moreparticipative with their followers.Thisrefersto a styleof leadershipin which theleadersaccommodatestheinput,observation,andideasof followersinsteadof makingdecisionson their own(Caroselli, 2000). Participative leadershiphas three majorbenefits.First,participative leadersrely on theinputof teams,which facilitatestheintroductionof newideasandmethodsof addressingorganizational challenges.Secondly,participative leadershipincreasestheacceptanceof decisionsandpoliciessince theyaremadethroughthe consensus.Third,participative leadershipincreasesthemoraleof theteammembers.Thisis becauseparticipative leadershipgivesemployeesan opportunityto airtheir views,which makesthem feelpersonallyliableforthevictoryof theorganization(Howell, 2006).

Aneffectiveleadershould seekto createsituationfactors(includingtheleadercharacteristics,followercharacteristics,andtaskcharacteristics)that can buildtheir influenceas participative leaders.Forexample,a participative leadershould be a teambuilderwhocan be trustedby followers(Caroselli, 2000). Theleadershould haveconflictmanagementknowledgeand skillsin ordertomaintainthegroupharmony.Givingteammemberstheindependencetheyneedto growconvincesthefollowersabout thecompetenceof their leader.However,theleadershould maintainan internallocus of controlwhiledemonstratingto followersthattheir participationisexpected.Moreover,increasingtheemployees’jobcompetencethrough stafftraininganddevelopmentgivesthem thecourageto participatein theteamwork.

Thenatureof theassignedtasksalsoinfluencestheeffectiveness of theparticipative leader.Clearlyuncertaintiesassociatedwith thetasksmakesthefollowersfeelconfidentandableto handleit.Thiscan be achievedby showingfollowersthesignificanceof thetasks,explainingtheir expectations, andrequiringtheir commitment.In conclusion,creatingfactorsthat substituteforparticipative leadershelpstheleaderimplementingdecisionsandpoliciesfastersince employeesare lessresistant.
