Examplesof a goodleaderanda goodmanager

Oneof myexperienceswith a goodmanageroccurredin a localrestaurant, whenIwitnessedthemanagerof thatrestaurantstepin as thewaiterwasdealingwith a difficultclient. In thiscase, theclientcameinto therestaurantwhiledrunkandusedabusivelanguagewhenaskingforservices.Themanagersteppedin calmtheclientwithout beingrequestedto doso.James Parker, theCEO of SouthWest Airlines, is an exampleof goodleadersI haveeverwitnessed.During theSeptember 11 attack,James encouragedtheemployeesof thecompanyto entertainclientsby takingthem to watchmovies, insteadof leavingthem stranded like otherairlinesdid.Thisdifferentiated Parkerfrom badleaders.

Fromthetwo examplesabove,Ilearnedthat, both themanagementandleadershipskillsare importantwhenone is headingan institution.Thisimpliesthata goodmanagerneedsto be a goodleaderin orderto be effective.Forexample, thecombinationof leadershipandmanagementskillsallowedParker to helpemployeesandclientsto overcomethechallenge, which helpedtheairlinesstandabove others.
