Employeesare some of the most fundamental elements of any business entity.Indeed, it is well acknowledged that their output or productivity isdirectly related to the overall productivity of a business entity. Inessence, it is imperative that they not only be well remunerated butalso well utilized. Scholars have noted that the level of utilizationof employees affects their job satisfaction, morale and motivation.Nevertheless, there are varied reasons that employees would beunderutilized in any organization.

First,it may be the case that there has been a change in the work emphasis.This could take place as a result of the change of focus by thebusiness entity from a product and process development to one thatcaters for marketing and packaging. This would mean that thenecessity of creativity and innovation has reduced while there is anincrease in the necessity for dependability and consistency, in whichcase employees find themselves to be out of step with therequirements of the business entity (Hymowitz, 2003). In addition, itmay be the case that the credentials that the individual employeeshave are outstripping the work demands of the company. This wouldcome into play in instances where the business entity persistentlybrings in highly experienced and educated individuals while thereexists insufficient high-level tasks and responsibilities for them.This may result in a situation where the senior employees undertakethe substantive tasks while the junior ones become bored andfrustrated, or the less expensive junior employees undertake theactual tasks thereby getting the senior employees relegated tomicromanaging and nitpicking (Hymowitz, 2003). This would result inresentment, with work hoarding becoming the sole antidote for theunderutilization. On the same note, it may result from specializationand stunted growth. Stunted growth comes up in instances where anemployee is incapable of growing from this form of work and,therefore requires new challenges so as to feel vibrant. In everyinstance where a company has grown, it is common for work to becomespecialized and segmented, in which case the tasks of an individualbecome more routinized and narrower.

Nevertheless,there are varied remedies to the underutilization in a company.First, it is imperative that the employees undergo retraining so asto acquire the skills that match up with the ones required in thecompany. It is inevitable that the company will always undergo achange in its production and realign its operations with the mostefficient techniques. In this case, it is imperative that theemployees undertake a constant retraining tendency that allows themto be in line with the current job requirements and remain relevant.

Inaddition, it is imperative that the employees undertake re-evaluationof their skills and their job. Undertaking this evaluation wouldallow for the matching of the skills of the employees in areas wherethey are required. It is noted that there are instances whereemployees applied for tasks that were simply available rather thanthose that they had majored in or where their talents and skills areconcentrated. In this case, reevaluation would come in handy inmatching them up.

Onthe same note, it is imperative that employees apply for tasks withinthe company in instances where they come up. More often than not,companies consider recruiting internally than from eternal pools, inwhich case the existing employees would always be considered.Similarly, employees must participate in the policymaking within theorganization so as to come up with creative and innovative ways,approaches and ideas of production. This is the most effective way ofensuring relevance and sufficient utilization in a business entity.
