North Carolina Health Improvements
NorthCarolina Health Improvements
Whenundergoing transition from the phase of childhood to that ofadulthood, most adolescents choose lifestyles that end up affectingtheir health. Violence, tobacco use, substance use, alcohol-impaireddriving, irresponsible sexual behaviors, poor eating habits, andphysical inactivity tend to have both short-term and long-termnegative health outcomes on these young people. The choices made byadolescents are influenced by their families, friends, communities, schools, and places of work. This paper discusses how the healthprofile of the adolescents of North Carolina can be improved.
Howto Improve the Health Profile of the Adolescents of North Carolina
Thereare various ways through which the health profile of the adolescentsof North Carolina can be improved. To begin with, the introduction ofschool-based programs that help to reduce violence is necessary. Theprograms can help to change the attitude of the adolescents and makethem less violent (The Guide to Community Preventive Services para.29). The programs should be introduced at various levels of learning(Kindergarten, elementary, and high school). They should target thoseschools located in places with high rates of crime.
Theproblem of tobacco use among the youths can be curbed by reducingteenagers’ access to various tobacco products. For instance, shopsnear schools should not be allowed to sell these products. This willhelp to ensure that there is no place these young people can gettobacco and smoke it (The Guide to Community Preventive Servicespara. 25). It is also important to educate adolescents on the dangersof smoking tobacco. This will help to discourage the behavior ofsmoking.
Inorder to reduce the problem of substance use among the adolescents, there is need to restrict the sale of alcohol and illegal drugs tothe minors. This will help to reduce cases of underage substance use(North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services 12). NorthCarolina should pass strict laws that will help to ensure thatteenagers and young adolescents are not allowed to enter bars. Thosewho sell illegal drugs to the young people should also be severelypunished.
Theissue of alcohol-impaired driving can be dealt with using the lowerblood alcohol concentration (BAC) regulations. North Carolina shouldapply these laws to all drivers who are below the age of twenty one. This will help to reduce the number of road accidents amongadolescents (North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services12). The young people who will break the BAC laws should receive asevere punishment in order to prevent them from repeating the samehabit.
Providingwork and vocational training to young people can help reduce theproblem of irresponsible sexual behaviors among the adolescents. Forinstance, youths should be equipped with basic skills that can helpthem to excel in the world of business, industrial sectors, and childcare centers. This will help to ensure that they get committed andhave no time to think about sex (Centers for Disease Control andPrevention 9). Most young people who exhibit irresponsible sexualbehaviors are those ones that are idle most of the time.
Itis also important to note that the problems of physical inactivityand poor eating habits among the adolescents can be curbed with thehelp of school-based obesity programs. This will help to reduce thecases of obesity among the young people living in North Carolina(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 7). The programs shouldemphasize on the importance of taking a good and balanced diet andexercising regularly. This kind of education can be part of schooleducational programs.
Justlike other adolescents in the other parts of the United States, thoseliving in North Carolina exhibit certain behaviors that do have anegative impact on their health. These include tobacco use, substanceuse, alcohol-impaired driving, violence, irresponsible sexualbehavior, physical inactivity, and poor eating habits. In order toimprove the health profile of these young people, it is important tocome up with important strategies that can help to reduce these riskfactors. This will help to ensure that the adolescent of NorthCalifornia lead healthy lives.
