Technologyhas become the most sought element in the modern world. Numeroustechnological inventions have become a positive aspect in improvingpeople’s lives. One of the sectors that have had massive impactthrough the various technological inventions is the education sector.However, there has been both positive and negative impact oftechnology towards learning. Technologyis a collection of procedures and modifications aimed at improvingthe quality of life in different domains (Kumar,46).Technology in modern day governs every aspect of our lives. This isbecause its adaptation makes it easier to tackle different tasks, andat the same time enhancing efficiency and reliability of the expectedresults.

Technologytakes on many forms including machinery and procedures which can beutilized relative to the task at hand. Therefore in a nut-shell, themain aim of technology is problem solving. It is also important tonote that technology is dynamic in nature. Hence, its composition isalways changing through advancements, creating new angles of tacklingissues. Today, the major landmarks made by technology, are thecomputer and the internet. These have greatly improved communicationand turned the world into a global village. This paper looks intodifferent impact of technology towards learning (Kumar,53).

Thesisstatement:Effectiveintegration of technology in education yields positive results andimproves overall performance of both teachers and students.

Ineducation technology has made a strong impact and has changed themode of learning. Traditionally, learning was a classroom affair andthe teachers, together with textbooks, were relied on as the primarysources of knowledge. However with advanced technology this haschanged due to the availability of the wide scope learning materialsavailable on the internet. In addition, students interact with otherstudents as well as with teachers on technological platforms.Moreover, learning occurs not only in classrooms but also in othervenues without time limits. This essay provides a comprehensiveanalysis on the positive impact of technology in education especiallyoutside classrooms (Paul, 407).

PositiveEffects of Technology on Learning

Advancementof technology has enabled students’ access to digital learningtools which can be used to improve the quality of education. Theseinclude cell phones, tablets, computers, iPads and iPods among otherswhich are emerging each day. It is evident that as technologyadvances, these devices become more and more affordable andavailable. Thus the student population comprising of mostly teenagersand young adults, can easily access these devices. These have greatlychanged the learning experiences for this digital generation in termsof access and storage of learning materials (Pitler,92).

Collegestudents can access educational materials at any time becausetechnology has eradicated time bounds. As stated earlier studentshave access to digital devices and most of them are mobile hence canbe used at any place and at any time. This increases learning hourswhich would not be otherwise achieved. Students can therefore quenchtheir thirst for knowledge at home and can make important discoveriesin the absence of teachers (Kumar,68).

Personalizedlearning has also been enhanced by modern technology. The unlimiteduse of these digital resources has improved individual learningexperiences. One is able to understand their personal strengths andweaknesses in different fields. This is important because classroomlearning creates avenues for generalization, which is based on theassumption that students are uniform in terms of comprehension. Thisis a fallacy because each individual is unique. Thereforepersonalized learning is key in improving performance of studentsrelative to their learning capabilities.

Technologyhas expanded learning materials and course offerings. Apart from theclassroom knowledge acquired from teachers in school, students areable to access other useful learning materials from technologicalsources which are available to the public especially over the worldwide website. These include books (eBooks) and other literary textssuch as reports. Also, articles from newspapers and magazines havebeen digitalized and are accessible online. Emergence of newgeneration periodicals which are only available in soft copies hasalso enhanced learning as students can use them as points ofreference. In addition, students can view important examples usefulfor assignments and to clarify contentious issues. They can alsointeract with other students globally to share learning experiencesand also compare learning materials. This open educational resourcesoffer vast knowledge which is important in carrying out comprehensiveresearch projects.

Onlinelearning opportunities have also accelerated education. This can bepurely online based or can be blended with face to face classroomlearning. Credit recoveries and summer school programs have benefitedfrom this form of learning because students’ convenience is cateredfor. Blended learning creates better utilization of the teachers’time in the classroom as further learning is carried out elsewherevia online avenues. Therefore, online learning has creatededucational opportunities globally enabling individuals achieve theirdreams especially through distance learning (Pitler,44).

Technologicalinfrastructure has created new ways of learning which are moreefficient and student friendly. Digital portfolios have enhancedinteractions among students and teachers. Students are able tointeract with other students globally and so are teachers. Studentsare also able to give immediate feedback to their teachers. Digitalgrade books are also important in evaluating students’ performanceand to ensure teachers are yielding positive results. Learning gamesespecially in mathematics improve the mental capacity of children andimprove performance. Tutorials also complement classroom learning andclarify issues. Therefore these digital resources should be utilizedproperly to enhance and improve the quality of education (Paul, 406).

Technologyis also important in improving teachers’ skills. The overallperformance of students is highly dependent on the teachers’performance. Therefore it is important to equip teachers withessential tools to aid in delivery of education. Technology hascreated opportunities for teachers to interact thus improving theirability to give instructions. In addition the wide content ofknowledge in the internet offers useful information which adds totheir knowledge. This has greatly widened the scope of learning forcollege students (Kumar,76).In addition, technology has been known to increase the teacher’simpact towards the learners, as he can use models to explain an ideaor a concept.

NegativeImpact of Technology on Education

Despiteits massive impact towards the learning process, technology hasequally hindered effective learning process. First, technology hasdeteriorated the thinking capacity of the digital student fraternity.Today’s students have embraced new technology into learning andthis has led to over reliance on these resources. Students thereforecannot be able to perform learning tasks independent of digital mediaespecially the internet. This has led to increased cases ofplagiarism when carrying out researches, and this is commonlyreferred to as intellectual laziness. In addition, the videoresources reduce the mental capacity of students to retain textualmaterials. This has reduced the reading culture among collegestudents, as information is sourced directly from the internet onlywhen needed. Thus the retention capacity to educational materials hasgreatly reduced in this digital era. More over these devices meantfor learning are directed by students to other uses such as socialmedia. Therefore, though technology is important in learning, itsabuse can lead to a generation of individuals with under developedminds (Fuegen, 50).

Conclusion

Theprocess of effective learning is complex and therefore there is noguaranteed road map that can be used to deliver education to achievedesired results. Therefore learning institutions should integratetechnology with education with the aim of improving overall results.This calls for in depth analysis of these technological tools toassess their ability to improve learning prior to implementing them.These tools should go hand in hand with the curriculums in place andshould also convert learning into an active rather than passiveaffair. Technology should also make education fun. Additionally, theimportance of technology in education cannot be over emphasized. Ifutilized properly technology can greatly improve the quality ofeducation. This is an important aspect given the nature of today’sgeneration. The educational system should take advantage of thesetechnological resources to complement the traditional ways oflearning. This should however be monitored so as to ensure thatstudents do not abuse these resources but use them appropriately toimprove their knowledge and lead them into being useful individualsin society with innovative ideas.
